New Interests

Eric and I (actually me, originally, but Eric has come around to appreciate it) have a few new interests. I've done quite a bit of research lately on the environment and have really started trying to reduce our carbon footprint. We've planted a garden, started a worm bin for composting our kitchen food waste, began drying our clothes outside on a clothesline (weather permitting), reducing the amount of plastic we use, cutting WAY back on driving and making our own household products (cleaners, laundry detergent, dishwashing detergent, etc.) to name just a few. It's been a very satisfying few months learning all the ways we can do our part to take care of the planet. I'm sure many of our friends and most of my family think we're turning into tree huggers but it doesn't take a lot of effort and it's really fun. There is a little compromise that comes with it - the all natural homemade dishwashing detergent sucks! So, if you are at our house anytime soon don't be surprised if our glasses don't look very clean : )
I've become pretty immersed in my new passion so if you are interested in a recipe for all natural homemade shampoo let me know - that's next on my list!
There is a great 20 minute video called The Story of Stuff that I thought was very good. If you want to see it go to http://www.storyofstuff.com/
I've also been really passionate about reducing the toxins in our home. It's pretty unsettling to find out what is leaching into our bodies through our lotions and body products but even worse than that is to learn what is in our children's products. I visit the Skin Deep website a lot and have done a complete overhaul on all the products we use on our bodies and also in our home such as shower curtains and dinnerware. The Skin Deep website is really cool because you can put in a product and find out the level of toxicity for it and what the specific ingredients actually do. Check it out if you are interested, the link is listed under "Favorite Websites" on our blog. Okay, I'll get off my (green, all natural) soapbox now.
