If you are looking to be a little more eco-conscience this year here are a couple of ideas. I love the idea of the World Vision Catalog. If I weren't making my gifts this year I would be all over this one!..........
1. Give consciously. By purchasing a “gift” in a friend or family member’s name from the World Vision Gift Catalog, you can help bring clean, safe drinking water to families in Africa by donating funds to dig a well; help residents in developing nations buy animals that can provide families with food and income; and fund the training of an entire family to grow their own crops.
Other ideas include:
-Gifts that don’t require batteries, which can leach metals into groundwater and soil.
-Toys made from natural materials, such as wood, cotton, hemp, or wool.
-Green-themed books, such as The Green Year (Alpha, 2008) by Jodi Helmer or The Pocket Idiot’s Guide to Your Carbon Footprint (Pocket Idiot’s Guide, 2008) by Nancy Grant.
-Wrap gifts in colorful magazine pages. Package small items in vibrant dishtowels tied with ribbon.
2. Celebrate responsibly. It’s easy to green your holidays simply by remembering the values you live by the rest of the year: Conserve, recycle, and reduce waste.
Some tips include:
-Decorate a living tree instead of buying a cut one that has been sprayed with pesticides and that will end up as mulch.
-Coordinate with neighbors when to light holiday decorations and to turn off lights after kids have gone to bed.
-Make your own ornaments.
