We did it. The girls got their H1N1 vaccinations today. I was apprehensive for a lot of reasons but one big worry was putting Madison through another shot after the ordeal we had last time. I'm so glad I didn't cave and get the nasal spray. Madison did AWESOME! Yes, there was lots of worrying ahead of time and plenty of crying but she did so much better than last time. Not only that, she was SO proud of herself afterwards and it was so neat to see, I would have hated to take that away from her. The nurse could not believe how polite she was when she was so upset and I was flabbergasted by how well Madison asked the nurse for what she needed. She asked her several times about how bad it would hurt, how it would feel (will it feel like a pinch?), how long it would last and then she asked her if she could have a drink afterwards, after that she asked if she could have a sticker afterwards and finally she told the nurse which leg she wanted it in without being asked. I was so proud of her and how she was so verbal with the nurse who she would normally not even speak to. I have to say I am much less worried about Madison's temperament than I have been before. When she really feels strongly about something she WILL ask for what she needs. What an amazing girl she is!
Kennedy did great as usual but didn't really know what was coming. I think the real worry comes a little later with shots. She's a trooper though and always has been.
I'm not sure if I was mistaken before or not but I guess they are giving the preservative free ones to all kids 2 and under, at least that is what this nurse said. I did make sure it was labeled as a single dose when she brought it in the room to make sure. The dose is different for 2 year solds than for older kids so maybe they are all like that although I am sure my friend had to get an injection for her two year old with the preservative. Maybe it's just what Peacehealth has at the moment? I don't know. They had no problem with me requesting the nasal spray but I actually think they are not following the health department rules. The health department had specific guidelines set up for who can get the injection vs. the nasal spray so that has either been lifted or Peacehealth isn't following it. Either way I'm glad because I wasn't going to get the nasal spray so it worked out for us.
I feel really relieved to have it over with and feel good about getting it. One more to worry about in about a month and that's that!
