Bacteria

I think the test went really well tonight but I won't know the results until next week.
What's more noteworthy are the results from our bacteria sample we took last week. We swabbed the garbage can door and we got LOTS of gross bacteria growing in our petri dish. Other groups swabbed things like the floor in front of a toilet in the men's bathroom (surprisingly very little bacteria), the handle to flush the toilet in the women's bathroom (quite a lot of bacteria here) and the area that water comes out of the drinking fountain (practically NO bacteria). Our sample from the garbage can door had the most bacteria by far than any of the other samples.....GROSS! Remember that next time you throw something away : )
We also coated a petri dish with staph bacteria and used different additives to see if any of them inhibited growth. We used water, surfacide (the cleaner that is used in the lab) and hydrogen peroxide. The water did nothing to inhibit growth, the surfacide did almost nothing but the hydrogen peroxide inhibited growth completely. It was really interesting. I've been using hydrogen peroxide in my household cleaner for a long time now and this is reassuring. The professor did say it's not good to use all the time and get it on your skin because it also kills the good bacteria so maybe I'll use gloves : )
Anyway, thought I would share the results for those of you that like to hear about bacteria : )
