Extended Nursing
There is something about this that I don't understand.......I know there are people who think it's wrong to see a toddler nursing. It still takes me by surprise when I witness someone saying something negative about it or hearing people talk about others doing it. It's one of those things that make no sense to me because it has absolutely NOTHING to do with anyone but the people it involves. People who judge moms who formula feed is another example of this. Yes, I completely believe breastfeeding is healthier for mom and baby but what do I care what someone else chooses to do? How on earth does it affect me? It's not like cigarette smoke or bad hygiene which is actually offensive to someone who is around. Seeing someone breastfeed a toddler doesn't require me to pay some kind of consequence for other people's personal decision so why do so many people feel compelled to judge someone on something that has absolutely nothing to do with them? People don't have to actually witness it to have a problem with it either apparently. They can just hear about someone nursing their older child and question why they are doing that. It seems to really bother people. I went to one La Leche League meeting when Madison was around a year old to get some information on extended breastfeeding and it was AWFUL. I asked several very specific questions and the only responses I ever got was "keep nursing". I never got anyone who could actually give me answers to my questions (I later researched myself to find out the answers to my questions). It was a group of women who were completely against formula and 100% for breastfeeding but I never got the impression that they knew why. I know this was an isolated meeting and that La Leche League is a very well respected organization who offers help to many mothers so I don't mean to put down the entirety of it but the meeting I attended was not helpful. If you know me you know that I am totally for breastfeeding. Neither of my kids have touched a drop of formula, Madison nursed for 25 months and Kennedy has nursed for 13+ and I have no intention of weaning her yet. And, if you know me really well you know that nursing did not come easily to me and I went through a lot of pain and still do from it. So, I am certainly not trying to make a case for formula but I also don't have a problem with anyone who chooses that. It's none of my business.
