Doll Cake Practice Run

We had a play date scheduled for this morning that ended up getting rescheduled. So, we were faced with a day with no plans to speak of. What should we do? Bake a cake, of course.

The girls' birthday party is fast approaching and I've committed to making a Barbie Birthday Cake. Yikes! In my head I am a fantastic birthday cake maker but in reality that is not the case. I have grand ideas but they don't often come to fruition. I thought I had better do a practice run just to test the recipe and length of bake time. I had a couple of very good helpers!

I no longer use food dye in my baking so I had to get creative. Last time I made beets in my steamer I saved the bright red juice that gets collected in the bottom and froze it.

Ta-da! It turned out the prettiest pink, much lovelier than any FD & C red #40 could have given me.
The taste testers couldn't have been more pleased.
More Please!
The cake just out of the oven.
Getting ready for frosting.
A quick chill after the crumb coat.
Here it is. I cut a lot of corners on this cake since it was just a practice run. I just used one cake recipe so it wasn't tall enough for a Barbie. The actual cake will be much taller and with more details and it won't have Saran Wrap showing. All in all I think it turned out really cute and the girls are going to love it when they get home.
